SUMMARY:English Civil War Society Major Event - The Battle of Chippenham\, Wiltshire
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July 2026\nChippenham will be transported back into the English Civil War\, as the Town welcomes the English Civil War Society for a spectacular weekend of living history. Between 11am and 5pm\, Island Park and Monkton Park will be transformed to recreate the dramatic summer of 1643\, when the conflict swept across Wiltshire and the West Country. \nA large\, atmospheric encampment and tented village will be set up on Island Park\, where 17th-century trades and crafts will be demonstrated throughout the weekend. Visitors will be able to see traditional skills in action\, meet townsfolk from the period\, and even collect freshly printed newssheets hot off a working 17th-century press. Re-enactors will be on hand to share stories\, explain their roles\, and talk about Chippenham’s place in the English Civil War. \nJust as in 1643\, Chippenham will be occupied by Royalist soldiers from Sir Ralph Hopton’s army\, marching from the hard-fought battle at Lansdown Hill near Bath. Their military encampment will be active throughout the day as Soldiers and Officers go about their duties while awaiting a visit from their General\, Sir Ralph. A Regiment of Foote\, Cavalry on horseback\, and artillery will feature in dynamic demonstrations for visitors to enjoy in Monkton Park. A full timetable with display times and activities will be available closer to the event. \nEvent organiser for the English Civil War Society\, Alistair North said\, “We look forward to bringing history back to life in Chippenham. The town is always very welcoming and it is going to be another great weekend as we portray ‘The Battle of Chippenham’ for the fourth time” \nEach afternoon\, the drama will escalate as Royalist and Parliamentarian forces engage in large-scale battles across Monkton Park\, with more than 400 Pikemen\, Musketeers\, Gunners\, and Cavalry taking part. Inspired by a significant moment in Chippenham’s past\, this weekend promises a thrilling blend of entertainment\, education\, and immersive storytelling. \nYou can view the timetable for the weekend here. \nJoin us as The King’s Army and the Roundhead Association come together once more to determine whether Chippenham will stand with the Crown or cast its lot with Parliament. \nThis is a free event delivered by the English Civil War Society in partnership with Chippenham Town Council.
